Maybe not everyone knows this, but KalaMitica was born from the idea of being able to put plants anywhere, even in the smallest spaces.

Of course, many things have changed since then, but there is still, and perhaps even more today than in the past, the problem of not having space in the home or office.

We live in more and more limited spaces, and using walls to put plants in is still a goal of KalaMitica.

This is why we like to make our followers aware of the need to have “+ green in our cities” and in our homes.

Yes, even at home the air can be polluted: many products and materials (such as paints and detergents that we commonly use) can release harmful substances.

But luckily nature comes to our aid!

There are many plants that can absorb pollutants in the air we breathe. Among them, today we present Tillandsias, the amazing air plants!

Tillandsia: the ‘vacuum cleaner’ plant

Tillandsias, belonging to the Bromeliaceae family, are plants native to Central America.

But not all of them come from so far away: they are also successfully cultivated in Italy, especially by Michieli Floricoltura with whom we have been collaborating for many years. The owner, Paolo Michieli, is not only a long-standing friend of KalaMitica but also one of the leading experts on this strange plant!

These plants are very curious: they are perennial and evergreen and live suspended in the air, without any substrate.

But there's more: they are known and appreciated for their ability to purify the air!

In fact, Tillandsia can be considered a real ‘plant hoover’ because it captures dust particles in the air, thus helping to keep the home environment cleaner and healthier.

Of course, we cannot expect it to do the cleaning for us, but it certainly helps improve the quality of the air we breathe.

How to care for Tillandsia air plants: our tips

Keeping Tillandsias healthy is easy with a few tricks.

First of all, place them indoors (as they cannot tolerate temperatures below 15°C) in a bright spot with diffuse, non-direct light.

Then pay attention to the humidity level, which must be kept fairly high. For this reason, Tillandsias do well in places such as the kitchen and bathroom.

And if your rooms are not very humid, you can simply arm yourself with a sprayer and spray the leaves of your plant with water. Tap water may be fine, but it is preferable to use water with low limescale content: rainwater, collected with a small basin, or water from the dryer will do.

This operation should be repeated once a week in the cold months, while in warmer periods it may be necessary even once/twice a day.

Only in this way will the Tillandsia be able to fulfil its task as an 'air plant', a true 'hoover' capable of intercepting and absorbing dust particles in the air.
