When we talk about school, a large slate blackboard immediately comes to mind.
Today, however, after many years of honourable service, the classic slate board is slowly being replaced by other, more modern and versatile types of boards.
A good alternative is the steel magnetic board, which in addition to the usual chalkboard features also offers all the advantages of magnetic attraction.
Let's take a look at the features and main differences between the two types of boards.
School magnetic boards made of ferritic steel

Today, the slate blackboard is often replaced in schools by a magnetic board made of ferritic steel.
The main function of use is still the same, as magnetic boards can also be written on with chalk and erased with a damp cloth or the classic felt eraser.
However, there is one big difference: ferritic steel boards also allow you to stick magnetic objects and accessories to supplement the traditional teacher's explanation.
For example, with magnetic pins it is possible to hang up maps, concept maps, notes and any other teaching material that can be useful for improving pupils' learning.
In kindergartens, on the other hand, colourful magnets in the shape of letters, numbers or with a variety of designs can be used to carry out teaching activities in a more interactive and engaging manner.
Slate school blackboards

Slate is a metamorphic rock of sedimentary origin, easily worked into flat, thin slabs.
It is a non-porous material and resists shocks well, but is easy to accidentally scratch.
Moreover, it can only be written on with chalk and not with other tools, such as liquid chalk markers.
Obviously, since the slate board does not contain iron, no magnets can be used.

We at KalaMitica are also manufacturers of magnetic boards for schools and teaching purposes.
The 'natural' successor to the slate board is for us the anthracite/charcooul grey magnetic board.
The steel plate is coated with special powder paint, creating a slightly rough surface suitable for writing with chalk.
Cleaning is quick and easy: a normal chalk eraser or a damp cloth is sufficient to remove all traces of chalk.
The numerous models available and the possibility of creating a chalkboard with a customised shape and size make it possible to meet a wide variety of requirements..
Finally, the magnetic containers in the range can be used as original chalk holders, eraser holders and marker holders.
Magnetic boards and the environment
In addition to the aspects already mentioned, we pay special attention to environmental sustainability:
-
steel is treated in accordance with the European REACH regulations, so that no hazardous metal residues are present;
-
we choose to use powder paints, which unlike traditional liquid paints do not require the use of solvents and do not release pollutants into the air or water;
-
we use an exclusive anthracite paint, designed and produced in collaboration with ST Powder Coatings, made from a very high percentage of recycled raw materials, to reduce industrial waste to a minimum;
-
our cardboard packaging is all FSC-certified, guaranteeing responsible forest management;
-
KalaMitica boards have no films, layers or foils on top of other materials to make them writable, but are made entirely of ferritic steel: they are therefore totally recyclable;
-
our boards are 100% Made in Italy.
In conclusion, therefore, magnetic steel boards represent a more modern, versatile and eco-friendly alternative to slate boards.
